January is traditionally the time of year when individuals set goals for the year ahead.  And there is usually plenty of good cheer and ideas available online and from friends and colleagues about how important and powerful that process is.

And it is and important and powerful process.  Setting goals creates focus, helps us make decisions and prioritise, generates motivation and enables us channel our time and efforts in productive ways.

But what if you haven’t got the energy to set goals?  What if you have begun the year fatigued, unmotivated or simply unclear?  Hard to even contemplate goal setting when you feel like that.

One way to gain that energy is to look back first, reflecting on the previous year and “closing the door “on it.  Accepting what has gone before, acknowledging insights, progress, growth, challenges overcome (or not) and our contribution to that which has been and gone, yields many benefits.

Done well, it reminds us of all the territory we traversed, reconnecting us with strengths, resources and insights.  I have found this process an excellent way to generate inspiration and clarity for myself and my clients.  We are ready to open a new door.
